Is palm oil edible?
Among the edible vegetable oils , according to their consumption, in the first place is palm oil, extracted from the nut of the palm fruit whose scientific name is Elaeis guineensis ( Sierra, 2013 ).
How is crude oil extracted from palm fruit?
The crude oil is clarified by centrifugation, washed with hot water, followed by drying . All these processes provide a yellow-red crude oil product due to the high carotene content. This crude oil is refined, where the free fatty acids are removed and the color is destroyed. Table 4.3 shows the palm fruit characteristics and oil composition.
Where do edible oils come from?
The origin of all edible oils is plants , with the only exception of oleomargarine-type products. The process of obtaining oil from plants includes dividing them into oilseed and fruit oils. The number of oilseeds that produce oil is higher than oils from fruits. In general, olive, corn, and sunflower oils are consumed as pure oils.
How is palm oil produced?
Palm oil production: The fruit is treated with steam to separate the pulp from the seed and inactivate the lipase activity. After that, a pressing process over the pulp recovers the oil. The crude oil is clarified by centrifugation, washed with hot water, followed by drying.
