What is degumming in vegetable oil refining?
Degumming is the first process in the vegetable oil refining which commences with the heating of crude oil. The feedstock is taken into the degumming vessel where the temperature of oil is raised slowly. The main purpose of degumming is to remove the Phospholipids / Gums from the crude vegetable oils.
Why is oil degumming important?
Oil degumming is a crucial process to obtain edible oils from crude seed oils . Using phospholipases, the degumming process runs more efficiently, leading to greater oil yield and improved separation of phospholipids from the oil. Phospholipase C enzymes enhance oil yield, and phospholipase A enzymes the removal of phospholipids from the oil.

What is the total degumming process?
The Total Degumming process involves dispersion of phosphoric acid/citric acid into the oil , allowing a contact time and then mixing lye in this acid ¨C oil emulsion followed by 2-3 hrs of retention time. Then the resulting oil is passed to Centrifugal Separator where gums are removed from oil.
