What is the classification system for base oil?
The most commonly recognized classification system is developed by the American Petroleum Institute (API) . According to the API system, base oils are divided into five main groups: Group I, Group II, Group III, Group IV, and Group V. Each group has unique properties that determine their suitability for specific applications.
What is a group 1 oil?
API defines group I as "base stocks contain less than 90 percent saturates and/or greater than 0.03 percent sulfur and have a viscosity index greater than or equal to 80 and less than 120". Originating in 1971, a better grade of petroleum base oil, which may be partially produced by hydrocracking.
What is a group II base oil?
Originating in the 1990s, a more refined grade of petroleum Group II base oil, produced by Hydrotreating. Group II+ base oils have a high viscosity index at the higher end of the API Group II range. The viscosity index is 110-115 minimum. Originating in 2015, produced by a gas to liquids (GTL) process.
What is a group V lubricant?
Esters are common Group V base oils used in different lubricant formulations to improve the properties of the existing base oil. Ester oils can take more abuse at higher temperatures and will provide superior detergency compared to a PAO synthetic base oil, which in turn increases the hours of use.
