One reason for encouraging the greater production and processing of sunflower oil in Tanzania is thus its potential for import substitution , which could generate income and jobs at home and have a beneficial impact on foreign- exchange outflows.
How are sunflower seeds extracted?
Once the seeds have been cleaned and dried, they are placed in a press machine where they are compressed to extract the oil. The pressing process produces a mixture of oil and crushed sunflower seeds, known as press cake.

Where is sunflower produced?
Sunflower is produced at large scale in a limited number of countries, and two thirds of the production are concentrated in Europe, including Ukraine and Russia and the Trakya region of Turkey. The other major producing countries are Argentina, China, United States, and the South-Eastern part of Africa (South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia).
