Deodorisation is the key process to produce high©quality refined, bleached and deodorised palm oil (RBDPO) in a palm oil refinery. In this work, an integrated simulation¨Coptimisation approach was adopted for the analysis of a deodorisation process in an operating palm oil refinery.

It involves degumming, bleaching and finally steam distillation , in which free fatty acids and other volatile components are distilled off from the oil using an effective stripping agent£¨usually steamunder reduced £© pressure and elevated temperature5£©.
What is a conventional refinery process?
The conventional refinery process consists of two units : (1) Refinery unit: CPO is fed into physical process for degumming and bleaching. Oil is next passed to the deodorizer to remove the odorous substances and eliminate free fatty acids using steam distillation under conditions of high temperature and vacuum.
How is palm oil refining done?
Pilot plant refining of palm oil was conducted at the High Oleic Pilot Plant, MPOB Head Office. The 200-kg per batch pilot plant comprises a degumming tank, bleacher, filter press and a deodorizer. Prior to each refining trial, the CPO was heated to 60 °C in an oven to totally melt the oil before its being transferred into the degumming tank.
